It’s no secret, a large portion of modern music within the church has been on decline in regards to lyrical content, theological depth, and musical excellency (This is not to say that all modern music is bad). The aim of our music should be to extol the character and attributes of God, exalt the person and work of Christ, and echo the truth of Scripture. Or as Scripture puts it, to "let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly" (Colossians 3:16). Whether it be a hymn for the congregation to sing on a Sunday or simply a song about life for the radio, our music should reflect a worldview shaped by the Bible.
A lot of music released today is sadly shallow lyrically or tied to false movements and dangerous teachers. Reformation has been needed. My approach to writing has been simple. I take a passage of Scripture or a theological truth and set it to music. The church needs to sing the words of Scripture. The church needs sound theology in their music. The church needs more music grounded in the truth.
